First Leg of studio broken

Yep, been over a week since we wandered into the depths of Fantom Studio and sealed the door behind us. Now we have 10 tracks of drums, all the album tracks and one rental track from an 80's movie. Also all bass lines were laid down.

It's been a very different session for us since the production is fully our responsibility. What a massive burden has Janne Saksa carried on our previous albums.. This time the material is far more aggressive and requires certain type of roughness so perhaps one way to achieve it is to give us about 3 or 4 months time to write, arrange, rehearse, record and mix most of the material for the album and leave us to produce it ourselves.

We have had to admit time and again that by no means putting together a full length album from scratch in a time in which most people refuse even to take a shit is the easiest thing in the world. Hell, at least it will be raw and furious. This album has 9 songs from which 80% is pretty much all out war and the rest 20% is heavy, like walking to the gallows.

What else have we learned in there? To cook steaks with a microwave oven, to cook lots of other stuff in the micro, we have filmed a documentary: The life of a drumstick, filmed 2 scenes of Virtual-Laihanen which gives you a sneak peek into a drummer's life behind the set. We also filmed some documentaries with lots of swearing in finnish and a drum clinic by Estonian drum wizard Kaü Tahto.

January 2nd will begin the Second Leg of the session, we will break that one and try to update this journal when stress, hassle and pop allows.

Laters,
Tuomas/Pain Confessor

Last but not least

Each album has had a song added within the last week before entering studio, Turmoil had Just Names Remain, Fearrage had DNA of a god. This Monday we patched up our latest and last addition to the album's tracklist: The Harvest.

We enter Fantom-studio this Friday to begin recording Purgatory of the Second Sun. They say third album is the hardest milestone for a band. It will be a very intense 2 months before this album will be ready for release and we will focus our hearts and minds into making this third album the killer of the Third Album Syndrome.

Demo

Howdy ho, folks!

We've been busy with writing album material and this weekend we got the fucker demoed. We recorded 8 songs: Without Redemption/Without Remorse, Ne Plus Ultra, Mercenaries, Last of Forever, Dreamcrusher, Second Sun, My Last Words, End.

Those are working titles, so changes to titles are still possible. At least one more track is on it's way to the album but we are already pushing it now as the 8 songs clock in around 38 minutes. We shall see about that one more song.

As a special treat for those who hang on and check out our site frequently we will put up a few audio clips and a short video clip from demo recording session. Those will most definitely give you an idea what kind of hell is about to be unleashed.

Keep surfing by so you won't miss the updates,

Purgatory of the Second Sun

"Well well, for once we managed to make up our minds about the album title BEFORE it is recorded and printed", I hear myself say and sigh in relief.

Yes, the album title is officially revealed now, and it is PURGATORY OF THE SECOND SUN.

Not a one word title. Not a short two word puzzle. Just a good old name that gives you a not so pretty idea about what will be ahead of us if a galactic disaster breaks out OR when you plug in the next Pain Confessor album.

It's a metal title. It will be a metal album, totally. Writing and arranging material for this CD has been a new found source of inspiration and an incredible adrenaline injection for all of us. Kivistö brothers Mikko and Make worked up a tune called Mercenaries, which is a mix of our traditional style and flirting with death metal in it's heavy as hell chorus. Not to mention another new tune that still lacks a title.

Death metal seems to be closer to our hearts than we have known before.

Anyways, that was our little update about the album title and new material coming along, keep visiting this journal for any new info about the process!

This means war!

Ok folks, here we go. As it may be evident from all the news on our website and stuff like that Pain Confessor is working on the third yet untitled album, a follow up to Fearrage and kind of a cornerstone in the bands career in certain ways.

Past year has been a year full of success and setbacks for us as a band and as individuals. Many things have happened that sucked, were fucked up and really pissed us off. Also many wonderful things happened that made us proud and kept us strong against the worst of times, kept us up as a unit of six members.

The wake of Fearrage most certainly helped build up the ferocity that will become Pain Confessor official album Number Three. This one is going to be something else entirely. We have probably never had this intense rehearsals before, the atmosphere within our confined training place can be bottled up and used as a Molotov's Coctail.

We have NEVER written this angry stuff, ever. I have about three to four pieces to comment for now and hear me well, my friends. These tracks really pave the way for the whole album and trust me there is no exaggeration here:

-- Last of Forever --

The first song that we began working at with the new album in mind. Wesleyer brought the core of the song and the arrangement department did short work of the piece in a very short time. Easily picked up by the whole band and definitely contributed to the following ease of song writing for the new album. Song starts with a bass and drum riffing, then introduces guitar heaviness and some melodic aspects, chorus mixes a lot of finnish melancholy with pretty groovy rocking stuff.

-- Ne Plus Ultra --

Wrote this song at home, inspired by some really hateful feelings, injected the lyrics with every aspect of anger I had experienced within a one year period. Song itself is a Slayer-meets-Obituary-meets-some classical composers. Lots of heavy riffage, a funeral dirge chorus and all that fancy shit.

-- Second Sun --

Now this one really sends shivers down my spine. Wesleyer brought this tune at the rehearsals and we slowly started to pick up his ideas about the song. After a few re-arrangements the song really became a war machine... Hell yeah, this song kills everything. It has heaviness in it's natural-disaster-type of a chorus, blast beats, fast death metal riffage and lyrics that are metaphorical yet bring forth visions of a galactic scale disaster. A fantastic heavy planet killer.

-- Dreamcrusher --

This one is still at early rehearsal stages but it's something of a death metal song with a majestic folk-esque chorus. Or waltz. I don't know what it sounds like, besides great. Pretty poetic despair in the lyrics, this one will be a killer.

Oh well, that's all for now. More to come as we fight our way through this pre-production phase and move our stuff to Fantom studio to record. It will be a new step for us and also the fact that we, the band, produce the album all by ourselves.

Later,

Tuomas/Pain Confessor

Crossing the last line

Pain Confessor is now crossing the finishing line concerning the recordings of the yet unnamed second album. Last lead vocals and guest vocals by Rainer Nygard (Diablo) were recorded during the weekend. The album is getting it's finishing mixing touches this week.

As previously mentioned the tracklisting is as follows, in a random order for now:

Ruin
Nemesis
Fall on Evil Days
Powderburns
Another Door
Pathetic Little Soul
Life Keeps Bleeding
Butterfly
Feardom
DNA of a God

It has been a rewarding process, sometimes stressful, sometimes amazingly easy and enjoyable and we have really been putting our hearts into this album. The end result will most definitely be a worthy successor to our debut Turmoil.

Thanks for reading this minimalistic journal I tried to keep about all happenings I personally experienced and was informed about.

Keyboards, Vocals and Deathmatches

Pasi has been recording his synth parts during the last few days. Even though keyboards still are not our main lead instrument Pasi has really introduced more variety and taken some cool steps to make our songs even better. From what I heard today, some pretty diverse sounds have been used besides the huge choirs and strings. Sounded so sweet I need to go get a shot of insulin.

Listening to Make growl Powderburns and Ruin made me wanna kiss myself for being in the band. The guy has so huge sound that it still amazes me... This stuff is going to be so fucking cool to get out in the open.

Technical newsflash: Bass sound was distorted by using Peavey 5150.

Around noon today we had some Celebrity Deathmatch 1 on 1, Make and I. Madame Cleo was as deadly as ever beating the hell out of Anna Nicole Smith. Wolfman ate Justin Timberlake, which was damn great. Now if only that could happen in real life...

Tomorrow they will be doing some more synths and vocals. Let's see if something damn hilarious happens so I get to report something!

Guitar day 9: Leads and melodies

Wesleyer finished up his stuff during yesterday and today morning and it was time for me to record the rest of my lead guitar parts for the remaining 5 tracks. I reworked my lead for Pathetic Little Soul from the version we had demoed and played live. Butterfly got some melodic candy, I was particularly happy with the end result.

Our newest song, DNA of a God, was a challenge for me as there was very guideline type of melodies in the song that needed to be honed into real killer ones. I worked on them for a surprisingly short time while consulting with our producer/wizard/engineer Janne Saksa. He seemed content with the resulting lines as was I. We got a really nice build up in the end of the song. I rarely have improvised so much and ever less on a record but this time it worked extremely well and came easy for me. What a cool ending for the album.

I have one more part to play in Life Keeps Bleeding but now it's open season for Make and Pasi to finish the vocals and keyboards during next week. Going to be some really kick-ass stuff!

Peace,
Tuomas signing off!

Guitar day 8: Fiddle fiddle fiddle

Tweedlydoo! Feardom, Another Door and Fall on Evil Days now have all their lead guitars played and await vocals and keyboards. Powerball and Behringer together gave so damn good punch and clarity to my lead sound that I didn't even bother with the Marshall. I decided to go with Wesleyer's Kramer as she stays in better tune than my Ibanez.

Tomorrow's plan is to do as many lead tracks for the rest of the songs as possible so Make can fully concentrate on his vocals next week.

Did I mention that the bass sound is beefy as hell? Well it really is, so there, I said it again. Can't wait to hear all the songs as final versions.

Off topic: World's best ski jumper and worst social drinker Matti Nykaenen got out of prison, beat up his wife/ex-wife/ex-ex-wife, went back to jail and got out again, stabbed some dude and probably goes back to jail again. This all happened within about a week. Wouldn't it be easier for all if they kept him in jail without occasionally letting him out?

Quick update: Apparently Mikko did play all bass lines except Feardom so we are on schedule! Cool.

Guitar days 5, 6, 7: Rhythm'n'Bass, yo yo yo, vox in da mix!

3 studio days have passed since last journal entry. We have been mostly recording rhythm guitar tracks and yesterday Mikko laid down some sweet-ass bass lines for 4 songs (Butterfly, Fall on evil days, Another Door, Pathetic Little Soul). Sounds beefed up, distorted and heavy exactly as it should. Great stuff and I'm sure there is more to come!

We are getting on with the process evidently, as about every rhythm track is now in place (4 per song, 2 of Wesleyer's, 2 of Tuomas') except Fall on Evil Days which I will play tomorrow to finalize the rhythm session. Wesleyer's rhythm tracks consist of 2 doubling tracks played identically while mine are mostly 2 similar tracks with harmonics and/or single notes for punctuation. While it may sound like wanking with every single note in there, this method makes the songs more roomy and "alive".

Going to delve into the wonderful world of lead guitars tomorrow... I am going to blow up the Marshall, even if I won't use it on the album. I just hate Marshall tone and I want to destroy the fucking speaker. The sound may even amaze me and get a shot at being presented on the final version of the album...NOT. I will use my ENGL Powerball amp for the lead tones and cleans (if I need cleans at all). Haven't decided yet whether I use Wesleyer's Kramer that has a more loose feel or should I whip out my porno-esque yellow Ibanez and do it the tight way ;)

Anyway, we have listened to Powderburns and Feardom for a few days now and Jaakko Kunnas (engineer) and I agreed to their potential. Powderburns has a quite sweet riff that had us going nuts, really heavy song, as death metal as Pain Confessor will get. For now at least. Feardom is a really fresh breeze with a pretty unique tone blending Egyptian/Arabic feel, heavy metal riffing and melodies that'll make lubricants obsolete.

Make made a welcome pass at Nemesis blowing away everyone in the studio, which is simply amazing feat in itself. 2 pairs of perfect pitch golden ears and a deaf Tinnitus-ridden control freak is something that needs a miracle to impress. Well, he did. After a long scream that would pop a vein in regular redneck's brain made everyone smile with admiration he said it wasn't good enough and screamed an even tighter one that lasted for a whooping 16 seconds. Good thing he still lives.

Yep yep, tomorrow we will record more stuff so we will keep you posted about our latest happenings.

Guitar day 4: F**k the ringing tone and bring on the heavy artillery

Off with Mr. T number 2 and enter Mr. T number 1. I played my parts for Ruin, Nemesis and Butterfly today. Wesleyer also finished his parts for Butterfly, that's one heavy piece of melodic metal. Not too happy a song...

Make came in to do some vocals for Pathetic Little Soul, and that one sounded really great. Apart from having my ears play tuning tone from A# on endless loop, this session has been great and this album will outright rock!

All in all, this week was very rewarding and we ended up with most of the stuff in decent shape. 4 songs remain for next week. That's gonna be sweet... Now out for some R & R.

Guitar day 3: Attack of Mr. T

Today it was all hell breaking loose for me. Mr. T attacked with full force, I had a fucking annoying Tinnitus peak in the morning and that scared the shit out of me. My day was cut short as I wasn't able to listen to anything even remotely loud and I need the music to have some punch to get the feel of things. So off with me, enter Wesleyer. Wes banged the songs for a few bucks worth and got Ruin, Nemesis and one track of Butterfly done. Good job on his part!

Guitar day 2: MacGyver 'n' Tipitii

This day saw us chugging in DNA of a God and Another Door. DNA being our newest song, it was refreshing to play and also proved to be very easy. Sounds great. Another Door is THE coolest MacGyver theme rip-off "like evah". You will see when the record is out!

Sad melodies again and these tunes introduced even more variety to our song arsenal. Which is nice. Some 80's metal feel is present too, as Janne Germany noticed. Good find and why not as we have our roots in the 80's anyways. Miami Vice and Samantha Fox...

Some parts had to be re-recorded once or twice because Janne just simply wasn't recording well enough ;)

Guitar day 1: Hell yeah!

Today we finally got to toy around with guitar sounds and even tried to record something. After playing through our default setup of Behringer speakers (no reason to laugh, really) and ENGL amps we plugged the heads into a Marshall JCM 800 Lead speaker. Sounded like shit. Not the ENGL, the Marshall. I made my mind about playing leads through the Marshall just for the fuck of it. We shall see what kind of crap comes out of that experiment.

Wesleyer and I bagged Pathetic Little Soul for starters and damn it sounded promising. Probably the most melodic piece of material we have recorded to date. Was a piece of cake. Tomorrow we will work on 3 more songs, remains to be seen what will come out of that.

We ended up playing all rhythm guitars through Wesleyer's ENGL Fireball, Seymor Duncan pickup booster, BBE Sonic Maximizer and the Behringer Ultra Stack 412 or whatever. My Powerball sits in there waiting for possible lead guitar assignment and that cardboard box named Marshall probably waits to get blown up within the next 2 weeks. All guitar parts were played with a Kramer, and most probably that will be true for the rest of the album too.

This album will most definitely be even more "metal" and at the same time more melodic piece of work than Turmoil. My personal thought, but feel free to quote me on that.

Back with more utter bs tomorrow, going to reward myself with a cool beer for a job well done.

Anguish, frustration and determination to kick some serious ass

Today was brutal. Last 3 songs gave us hell for some reason. Perhaps the weekend had reigned over us in such a manner that even the simplest riff proved to be almost impossible to play straight.

We spent a few hours working on Feardom and finally nailed the bastage. Next we took on our most death metal-esque tune to date, Powderburns. Sucker had some fast riffage, gotta love the heaviness of that one. Last but not least we recorded Ruin, our planned opener for the album. We also included a heavy intro.

Now that all the drums are done, it's time for Janne (Saksa, producer, engineer) to do some editing and mixing so we can proceed to lay down some guitars. Can't wait to get on with this!

Day of the Iguanas

Tractor beam high engineer TK69's lost diary, war date 43457876,1/41:
Hung over, that's our mood for today. Starting at 10:00 am we had one tired drummer and one extremely ill and tired guitarist haunting the hallways of Studio Sound Supreme like ghosts looking for their lost bodies. The night had been rough and the bars took no prisoners.

It was a task of courage and bravery to get even a single note out of my instrument so I, Tuomas, decided to go get some sleep from 10 am to about 1 pm while Mikko finished up a few drum parts he wanted to try out. Wesleyer appeared sometime amidst my beauty sleep, offering me a cold beer which I turned down even to my own surprise. Our velvet voiced vocalist Make came to hang around for a few minutes, mostly drinking coffee and interrupting my most vivid, slimy and morbid dreams every now and then.

Being hung over both me and Wesleyer decided to share our one and only beer he brought with him and started to mettle our powers by a few rounds of Celebrity Deathmatch! That was something, let me tell you. Our custom heroes Wesleyer and Tuomari (The Punisher-namesake)took on some fierce foes like Ron Jeremy (tough hedgehog), Anna Nicole Smith (not so tough piece of blubber), Marilyn Manson (don't care for the music, but the dude had some serious knives stashed up his sleeves!) and Busta Rhymes, whom we beat up way more than once. Bassist Mikko also joined us in the battle against these Celebrities. Such wonderful times we had, it was almost a crying shame we had to stop playing around and start playing some songs for our sophomore album.

So we went in and recorded Another Door and Life Keeps Bleeding. This day was mostly for the birds but tomorrow we will bag this baby and put it to bed, just to start laying over the icing on the cake we've been baking.

Tech info if anyone gives a flying duck: Guitars will be recorded using ENGL Powerball head and Behringer speakers, I even planned on trying out a Marshall JCM speaker for leads even if it's going to be in vain coz I eventually will use the Behringer. Wesleyer bought a Seymour Duncan Pickup-Booster and wanted to say that the thing really adds to his tone. Yep.

- More crap tomorrow, Tuomas signing off!

Four more tracks caught on "tape"

Overlord TK69's Log, Blind Date 616,666:
Yep, we nailed Nemesis, Butterfly, Fall on evil days and our newest song work-titled as DNA of a God. Great total considering our plan was to record 3 base tracks. Coffee was not so surprisingly a success throughout the day. Ami from Corruption Inc. stopped by and we had a blast enjoying a few beers and shooting the breeze while listening to their brand new mastered album. Sounds heavy indeed, great stuff!

Today's Hardware Corner: Drums used to record the tracks for the album consist of Tama Rockstar set with 3 rack toms, 1 floor tom, bass drum and various "bells" and cymbals and whatnot. Snare drum was a Ludwig sd borrowed from Tommi Saksa. Great sounding snare! Maybe we even figure out the tom sizes someday...

Ok, time to get busy!

Supreme Chancellor TK69's log, Bar-date 2345464,1/2:
First day behind us and first base track recorded. First squad thrown into the fire was and will be for the next few days Wesleyer (guitar), Tuomas (guitar) and Mikko L (drums). Pathetic Little Soul got it's drum tracks punched in quite painlessly and the vibes were great. Tomorrow we need to get 3 more drum tracks recorded to keep in schedule.

We originally planned on using a click track for all the songs but after trying out Pathetic Little Soul with a click and without one, we decided to get rid of the cowbell for this groovy and rocking track. And it worked!

For techie wankers we will be posting some equipment info as soon as we get to know what we use ourselves.

Into the Studio we go!

Uberlieutenant TK69's Log, Bar-date 802032,1:
After a rigorous rehearsal period we have 10 songs honed and tuned, so it's time to pack our gear and head on into the bowels of Studio Sound Supreme! Tomorrow we have to set up a base camp at 50 feet, stack the drum set and lay out some plans how to proceed from here on.

It will be a hard month but also rewarding. Lots of coffee must be stored to last the whole month. Also malted drinks and handily microwaveable small portions of bread-like foundation with various meats and other stuff on top, they call these "pizza" but I beg to differ, are essential in large quantities.

About the material we are about to record.. If not before, the last few rehearsals have given plenty of reasons to say that the second album will be much heavier than Turmoil. We have really heavy stuff like Powderburns, Butterfly is really heavy too even if it's not as brutal. Lots of fast riffage like Life Keeps Bleeding, Ruin and Feardom. Melodies have gone up a notch, making the heavy parts even heavier.

We will see what this sounds like when put on record!
